FAQ

How do I get involved?

Students – click on the registration link for the Aggies Invent you are interested in and register. You will be notified if you are selected for that event.

Others – send an email to aggiesinvent@tamu.edu and let us know that you are interested in participating, sponsoring, or providing us with a Need statement. We will contact you and get you involved.

How are students chosen?

Students are chosen to participate based on the answers provided in the application. We are looking for motivated students with a variety of skills at multiple levels (freshman through Ph.D. candidates) who are good at solving problems and want to take those solutions to market. We will notify you about one week in advance of Aggies Invent and get you more information about that specific event.

Is Aggies Invent open to graduate students?

Yes. We encourage both undergraduate and graduate students to apply. Graduate students have the opportunity to be participants or mentors.

Do I have to be an engineering student?

No! We want students from multiple colleges to apply because great solutions require different perspectives and skills.

Sounds interesting, but kind of sounds intimidating. Is it?

No. We want to challenge all levels of students to explore innovation, creativity, and teamwork. This is a very supportive and safe environment to challenge yourself to push boundaries. We encourage risk, expect failures, and cheer with you for your successes.

Can I participate in several Aggies Invent weekends?

Yes.

What is a Need Statement?

A Need Statement is a problem that has been identified by an industry or agency partner that they want to be solved. These are open ended real world problems that you will be challenged to solve. Need Statements come to us without Intellectual Property restrictions – so the solution is yours.

How are teams formed?

On Friday afternoon, we will gather, have an introduction, and then form teams around the Need Statement. You will select your own team with a small bit of guidance. For instance, no teams larger than 6 and we want a mix of disciplines and levels. We call this “The Dance”.

Will there be food?

You will be well fed throughout the weekend.

What does it cost?

For students, there is no charge. Just bring your ideas, time, skills, and enthusiasm.

Do teams compete for awards?

Yes. During the final presentation, Aggies Invent teams will be judged by a panel of expert judges based on their solution to their need statement, presentation, and market appeal. The 1st place team will be awarded $1,000, second place will be awarded $750, and the third place team will be awarded $500.

What about sleep?

Sleep is over rated! Actually, we will close on Friday night about 10:30 pm so everyone can get a bit of rest. Then we will start at 8:00 am Saturday and stay at it till you are finished. Presentations are due at 3:00 pm on Sunday. Teams can work out when they want to take breaks or get a few hours of sleep. No sleeping facilities are available at the EIC.
